Measurements of Co Redshifts with Z-spec for Lensed Submillimeter Galaxies Discovered in the H-atlas Survey

چکیده
We present new observations from Z-Spec, a broadband 185−305 GHz spectrometer, of five submillimeter bright lensed sources selected from the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS) science demonstration phase (SDP) catalog. We construct a redshift finding algorithm using combinations of the signal-to-noise of all the lines falling in the Z-Spec bandpass to determine redshifts with high confidence, even in cases where the signal-to-noise in individual lines is low. We measure the dust continuum in all sources and secure CO redshifts for four out of five (z ∼ 1.5−3). In one source, SDP.17, we tentatively identify two independent redshifts and a water line, confirmed at z=2.308. Our sources have properties characteristic of dusty starburst galaxies, with magnificationcorrected star formation rates of 10 M⊙ yr . Lower limits for the dust masses (∼a few 10 M⊙) and spatial extents (∼1 kpc equivalent radius) are derived from the continuum spectral energy distributions, corresponding to dust temperatures between 54 and 69 K. In the LTE approximation, we derive relatively low CO excitation temperatures (. 100 K) and optical depths (τ . 1). Performing a non-LTE excitation analysis using RADEX , we find that the CO lines measured by Z-Spec (from J= 4 → 3 to 10 → 9, depending on the galaxy) localize the best solutions to either a high-temperature / low-density region, or a low-temperature / high-density region near the LTE solution, with the optical depth varying accordingly. Observations of additional CO lines, CO(1−0) in particular, are needed

GBT Zpectrometer CO(1-0) Observations of the Strongly-Lensed Submillimeter Galaxies from the Herschel ATLAS
The Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS) has uncovered a population of strongly-lensed submillimeter galaxies (SMGs). The Zpectrometer instrument on the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) was used to measure the redshifts and constrain the masses of the cold molecular gas reservoirs for two candidate high-redshift lensed sources. We derive CO(1-0) redshifts of z = 3.042± 0.001 a...
متن کاملA Comprehensive View of a Strongly Lensed Planck-associated Submillimeter Galaxy
We present high-resolution maps of stars, dust, and molecular gas in a strongly lensed submillimeter galaxy (SMG) at z = 3.259. HATLAS J114637.9−001132 is selected from the Herschel-Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS) as a strong lens candidate mainly based on its unusually high 500 μm flux density (∼300 mJy). It is the only high-redshift Planck detection in the 130 deg2 H-ATLAS...
متن کاملZ-Spec: a broadband, direct-detection, millimeter-wave spectrometer
Z-Spec is a broadband (195 310 GHz), direct-detection, millimeter-wave spectrometer with moderate resolution (R ~ 350) that we are building to observe CO rotational lines and atomic fine-structure lines in the recently discovered population of submillimeter galaxies. A large fraction of these sources cannot be identified optically and thus redshift determination is extremely difficult. The larg...
متن کاملA survey of the cold molecular gas in gravitationally lensed star - forming galaxies at z > 2
Using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), we conducted a survey of CO J = 1− 0 and J = 2− 1 line emission towards strongly lensed high-redshift dusty star forming galaxies (DSFGs) previously discovered with the South Pole Telescope (SPT). Our sample comprises 17 sources that had CO-based spectroscopic redshifts obtained with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and ...
متن کاملSpitzer Imaging of Strongly Lensed Herschel-selected Dusty Star-forming Galaxies
We present the rest-frame optical spectral energy distribution (SED) and stellar masses of six Herschel-selected gravitationally lensed dusty, star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) at 1< z< 3. These galaxies were first identified with Herschel/SPIRE imaging data from the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS) and the Herschel Multi-tiered Extragalactic Survey (HerMES). The targets...
